Horizontal banding is an 8 bit artifact usually associated with extreme color corrections. Change your image to 16 bit in Photoshop and re-render. In other platforms, activate the Force 16 bit Processing parameter within the Dfx filter.
If the image you are using is not in the RGB color space, the Dfx plug-in will be grayed out and you will be unable to select it. Change your image to RGB by going to the Image > Mode menu and select RGB Color.
The initial versions of Dfx conflicted with certain OSX Universal Access System Preferences when they were activated. We have since resolved this problem. To fix this, download and install the newest version of Dfx v1 for Photoshop.
